Are you an introvert at your core? Are you a homebody? Does the thought of leaving the house and socializing with people make you anxious? Would you rather hang out with Dogs than People?!? Then you should meet Wookie, he feels the same way about life! Wookie is a 15 pound Mini Poodle estimated to be born in May 2017. Thanks to DNA testing from Embark, we’ve got a fresh take on how old he really is. He does resemble his namesake a bit, do you see any Chewbacca in him? Wookie first came into rescue in August of 2023 after being released from his life of breeding and has been in his current foster home since June of 2024. He has made lots of progress, but is going to need a special home that understands him and is willing to allow him to be who is he is. He is a very shy boy and needs someone that is going to help boost his confidence, and flourishes best in a home with other dogs and very patient people. It takes him some time to warm up to new people, but once he trusts you, he will share a couch, chair or bed with you and even allow pets. His safe place is his kennel and he will sleep through the night in it without making a peep and is also in the kennel during the day while his foster family is at work. He also loves to hang out on the couch, chair or a dog bed and snuggle with his toys. He enjoys being outside and does well in a fenced in yard, pen or on a leash. He hasn't had an accident in his kennel or in the house while supervised, but does occasionally mark his territory. He rides well in the car in his kennel. He loves to play with his toys independently and is quite animated and goofy about it, but will stop if realizes he's being watched. He doesn't play with the three other small dogs in his foster home, but he relies on them to show him the routine and to feel comfortable in new situations. As a result, his new home must have another small and confident dog for him to bond with and to support him. Large does can be a bit intimidating for him especially if they are rambunctious. He also enjoys the company of cats and does just fine with them. He has a bit of a prey drive though for bunnies in the yard, so small animals in the home might be a challenge. In addition, he would do best in a home without a lot of chaos that would make him anxious such as loud noises and small children. He is afraid of loud noises such as fireworks and thunderstorms and does best given sedatives in those situations. He has graduated from a shy dog training program and his adoptive family will be taught how to best help him live a happy life. He knows his name, comes when called, goes into his kennel on command, will wait, walks nicely on a leash and knows how to sit. He needs to have the time and space to do things on his terms and as a result, he doesn't like to be approached, picked up or handled. This of course makes grooming challenging and most successful with sedatives and regular grooming as he has a high maintenance coat prone to becoming matted. He is currently on a life long medication called Fluoxetine to help him with his anxiety and as a result he has made lots of progress with training and learning how to be a more confident and happy dog. Do you have a quiet home, another dog or two, more patience than the average person and lots of love to give? If so, Wookie may just be your man!
