Meet Polar! My daughter and I have been fostering polar for almost 2 years. He has blossomed. He is a 55 lb white terrier mix that always has a smile on his face.  In the beginning, he had trust issues with food and toys, but he quickly learned that there was nothing to fear. He is great friends with our energetic 10 year old resident dog. They can roughhouse like a couple of toddlers.  Many times, I put them out onto the deck or in our fenced-in yard. A fenced-in yard is a plus for Polar. He gets the zoomies and that’s a perfect spot for him to run.  His back legs are weak, so the zoomies don’t last long. Polar does get excited to go for short walks. He is easily distracted by new smells and he forgets that he is on a leash and wants to investigate everything. We do have an old resident cat. She puts up with very little, she doesn’t run and he has learned not to bother her. He will, however, Chase outdoor kitties.
We are probably very prejudiced, but we think Pollar is very sensitive and smart. He takes scolding very seriously, so we have to be careful not to shame him. Verbal commands he knows are stay, wait, leave it, OK and treat. Polar has his own special space in our house, so when it’s time to go to bed or kennel up, we will say” time to go night night polar “or “go to your room, “ and he immediately does.  There is one special command we use and it is TRADE. We use this when he has something that he shouldn’t have. An example, he found a glove on the floor. He’s not supposed to have it, so we get a treat or two, show it to him and say TRADE. He will drop the glove, get the treat, we take the glove and all is good.
Like I said, we are prejudiced. It is nice to come home and see this smiling white ball of fur greet us in the morning or when we return from work. Polar would be a wonderful addition to your forever family
